Cross-sectional study of sound primary dental enamel revealed hardness zonation and, in parallel, significant change the Mg content below prismless layer. is known to play an important role apatite biomineralization, therefore, ion exchange experiments were carried out on outer surface molars and reference abiogenic Ca-phosphates using MgCl2 solution. Effects incorporation crystal/particle size, ionic ratio morphology compared observed changes explained by parallel diffusion dissolution/reprecipitation processes. Based depth profile analysis high resolution electron microscopy Mg-exchanged enamel, a poorly ordered layer approximately 10–15 nanometer thickness was identified. This thin strongly enriched has non-apatitic structure. Below layer, increased only moderately (up ~3 at%) crystal structure preserved. As common effect exchanged volume, exhibited about 20% increase nanohardness, which intrepreted strengthening both region due decreased crystallite size incorporated Mg, respectively.
